Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best Dick's Picks/ reviews?

So, a dear friend of mine just gifted me his complete set of the Dick's Picks series, 1-36. I guess he ripped them all onto his HD and figured he could clear out some space. (He also gave me his Views From The Vault, but that's neither here nor there).

In any case, I'm left with a daunting amount of material to listen to, and I'm not sure where to begin. Which DP are considered the best? Which are noteworthy for what reasons? Has there ever been some sort of consensus poll taken that rates them in some reasonable order?

Basically, I'd love for some kind folks to clue me in on where I should start, what shows are good for what, and so on.

The jamming on Dick's Picks # 19 is so superior to any of the other DP's, or other official releases for that matter, that it's not even funny!

I really like 10, Dick's fave was 36. 15 is great.
Just my favorites. Would love to hear 31, because I was at one of the shows.

For reviews of all the grateful dead recording including Dicks Picks, roadtrips etc go to the site.

http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/music.htm.

Many other artists recordings can be found there as well.

I have found the site to be useful.

Congats on your present.

i suggest you check out the china rider from dp 31. its all around fantastic but the china cat jam puts me on my ass and the feelin groovy segue into rider is ridiculously beautiful. plus the rider is absolutely raging. just my opinion.

Vol.4- Along with Two from the Vault, this is possibly the best official release in the entire GD catalog!

Honorable mention: Vol. 8, Vol. 12, Vol. 22, Vol 26

No love yet for DP16, which I think I remember reading was Dick's all-time favorite show?

it's a really tough choice, but i agree to start w/ 8; it's the best, and my first :)

after that, the rest of my personal top 10 in order:

12
36
28
4
2
31
3
11
16

if i could go back and do it all over, i'd start with those, but for the most part their all good. i would, however avoid a few; 9, 27, and 24 are very weak imo

I start with the Balitmore 72 show from DP 23 and the 9-21-72 show from DP 36. Both excellent full shows, without, I think, any of the unnecessary editing and deletion of songs. I'd follow that up with DP 5 the 12-26-79 show, one of my favorite 79 shows, then onto DP 4 highlights of the 2-13/14-70 run. It has the full Dark Star and Other one, among other highlights of the run. DP 29 has two complete May 77 shows are nice.

Damn fine friend...you owe him...or perhaps he owed you.

#2...DS
#16...jammed out all the way through, sit back and let go
#36...just some fine music/songs all the way through, a "can't miss"
#4...good early Dead, I like "Mason's..." anytime I can get it

Hopefully you took the advice of just putting them on and letting them play...you can see what era(s) I'm stuck in...so grain of salt.

Really depends what era you like . 12 is one of my favorites . If you haven't heard these shows 4, and 8 were once the cornerstone of early Dead collecting , and they still hold up ! 20 has a couple of shows from 76 that might surprise you .
I also think going by number is the best idea . Also it will be easier to keep track of what you have played .
Boy are you one lucky mofo !

Those are valid questions. Tell ya what... send them all
to me. I will listen to them all and get back to you with
the exact order you should listen to them in.

Good lord, man. Does he also loan out his girlfriend?

I particularly recommend the following:

1 (if only for Here Comes Sunshine)
2 (if only for one of the sweetest Dark Stars and the single greatest NFA-GTRFB-NFA)
3 the whole thing, especially the Sugaree
4 the whole thing, fierce jams
8 the whole thing, perfect mix of acoustic and electric
12 perhaps the greatest China-Rider; glorious jam out of WRS
36 a truly perfect show, the apotheosis of the '72 sound

Ten has the best intro to Sugar Magnolia ever. Listen close to Jerry's jam in the first 12 measures of that song. Sublime!

Great gift ! My advice is just start at the first and play them in the order they were released because the variety of views you will get here will just leave you dazed and confused. Enjoy !

Why the hell don't I have friends like yours???

I would get one of those multiple disc CD changers that can hold 100 discs or so, load it up with all the DP, then hit shuffle until it plays through every last song.

Then do that 6 more times.

They are basically all gold.

Personal favorites:
2 (Dark star is a top-five ever version IMO)
4 (ditto)
8 - if you haven't heard this by now you are in for a treat
11
12
19
22
23
26
29
31
34
36

I gave up on justifying each one, they're all so good.

Start with 8.
